Anticipation is provocative. It begins...

Under the Light of a Full Mad Man Super Moon. A “Genesis” Recreation of “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway” by The Musical Box at the Variety Playhouse, Atlanta, Georgia, last night, Sunday May 6th, 2012

Anticipation is provocative. It begins... as a very small emotion and as time ensues it grows to much larger proportions. Having never been delighted by the presence of The Musical Box in an auditorium full of loyalists, the Genesis years that featured Peter Gabriel was presented in more than a trip back in time, rather it was a resurrection of an era of progressive rock that included fairy tales and theatrics for the common man.

My nephew, in NY suggested that” this” will be the show to see. Having heard stories with the likes of folklore from an uncle who had been to as many a Genesis concert as there were albums and then some. “This” was something to see and authorized in some way by Peter Gabriel, Michael Rutherford, Steve Hackett and Phil Collins. An effort to recreate an event for the eyes and ears that experienced such an incredible show, Back in NYC… in 1974.

Now that would be something to anticipate. Luckily, the extravaganza would take place at a location in Atlanta, that is legendary in itself, let alone a favorite spot to see music of all kinds, in a venue that is intimate, comfortable, open and easily one of the best Atlanta has to offer.

“The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway” was the crescendo to a bands rise that ended with the departure of theatrical front man Peter Gabriel. At the time, I recall seeing that presentation, having been a loyalist Genesis fan growing up in NYC, after listening to the likes of Scott Muni play “Twilight Ale House” on WNEW-FM on “Things from England” on a Friday afternoon. Those distant days of liner notes, lyrics and all things “Hipgnosis”. Those days were the college years and they included seeing this original show in Rochester, New York, at the Auditorium Theatre. Followed by an interesting trip to Albany and the Palace Theatre, and concluding with heading home for the single sole purpose to be back in NYC for “The Lamb” once more at the Academy of Music on 14th street.

“The Lamb” was to be a very stark and physical presentation. Coming from an English band with experience in writing and performing rock theatrical masterpieces. Our supper was ready. “It” was about a kid in New York City, a kid who was an “Imperial Aerosol King” and a graffiti artist who would take us on a visual and mindful journey.

Could anything or anyone, ever, in ones wildest imaginings, recreate such an incredible presentation and performance. Especially, since in those days, Genesis and Peter Gabriel were often criticized by the music press for being pretentious. It was bat wings, uniforms, masks, and a multimedia presentation done the hard way. In an age when film and slides were the rage, rather than a digital computer animation. Critics complained, that “The Battle of Epping Forest” from “Selling England By The Pound” was steeped in English slang and vernacular, that couldn’t possibly be understood or cared for by an American rock audience. “Pretentious” stories, based in fantasy, literature, nursery rhymes, with religious overtones from the bible. “It” was rock and roll, and not Sunday School they cried!

Genesis however, prevailed. Through their iconic presentations, their loyalists, like I, did follow, from Rochester, to Albany,… to NYC... to Atlanta, and now to the Variety Playhouse, to see The Musical Box and “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”. Surrounded by loyalists, in an audience filled with AARP card holders, that perhaps for only one evening, meant the “Authentic And RAEL Presentation” of “The Lamb”.

If you have been anticipating this presentation, if you have wondered what it would be like to go back in time, just for a few hours, to hear two album sides connected in “Its” entirety, “It” will enthrall your senses with images of what is “RAEL” and what will become real if only for a brief moment in time.

Timing is everything in life. In Atlanta the timing included a full super moon at perigee the night before and a continued Mad Man Moon on the drive to the Variety Playhouse. Such befitting visual natural circumstances. The genius of Genesis is captured by The Musical Box and their incredible attention to detail in chords, progression, performance and costume. For the Genesis loyalist, this presentation is a must, as “It” like everything in life is fleeting as time. Peter moved on and gave us more, Phil came forward and more than filled in. Genesis and Gabriel gave us a body of work over the years that have pleased and mesmerized us all. To step back in time for “The Lamb” with the Musical Box is a gift, blessed by a band who understands, and presented through hard work with the loyalty of saints.

Critics may still say, you can see right thru “It”. However “It” will be kept alive. “It” you see, is only “Knock and Know All”, and you can leave “It”, or you can love “It”, or as all Genesis fans can tell a critic “Shove It”.

“It” is “Only Rock and Roll” and we love “It". If only you can see "It", don’t miss “It”.

Terrestrial radio has an antenna tower and a licensed frequency in a specific location... each location has similarities and then it ends there... local flavor... support... is acquired and understood because you live there... one clearing ...house for music and ideas, rather than integrating local passion, experience and alternate opinions into the mix is a sin... local input, debate, opinion, alternate methods and ideas creates improvements that would otherwise never occur... we are all the same yet we are all different... like the cities and towns across this country... tough to mow the lawn on Saturday with the box screaming Boston from the garage while doing the front yard and once again a short time later when you wash the car... that's why the kids listen to their iPod... they are the future of music... they will be here and hereafter we’re gone… the music matters to them and crossing boundaries exposes a new artist through an adjacency to similarities derived from their personal influences so evident in their work… isn’t that how rock history was created... when you mixed The Band, The Who, Joni Mitchell, The Doors, Poco, Genesis, Dan Fogelberg, Jimi Hendrix, and Cream with the Doobie Brothers, Harry Chapin and Pink Floyd... and still had room in your mind for your Dad’s Frank Sinatra collection… or in a Zune perhaps....

Last night Greg Lake played here in Atlanta at a very cozy and intimate venue the Variety Playhouse.... a very long distance from the arenas of the seventies... the format was unique much like Jon Anderson's presentation a year ago on the v...ery same stage... with some significant, yet subtle differences... it was only Greg... yes... and the couple next to me mentioned... gee no drum set? Is he "alone"... I thought well... certainly appears to be sans an electric piano... and then guessed... well in an age of MP3's, Macintoshes and overdubs... he has probably multiplied himself.. He did and added the feel of a community radio interview... stories between songs... questions from the audience... such a great distinct voice... and a surprise... Christmas in April... when one question came up about this song... if he's there... where you may be... be there... it's worth it... and we all still believe...
I believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake - Ian Anderson

Pete was always full of eloquent explanations... listening to and looking forw...ard to WNEW every day was a musical learning experience and Pete's explanations and descriptions were full of sheer profundity... in fact the music and the lyrics were full of life and Pete and WNEW took the time to explain and explore life with us... so much of Pete and WNEW is a part of us all this morning... Pete kept the Beach Boys alive on a transition from AM radio to FM even as it became "progressive" and formats changed…. there was always a space for our own Americana in his Mixed Bag and that's why God made radio and gave us Pete and WNEW. God Bless you Pete Fornatale…The Beach Boys - That's Why God Made the Radio!

How appropriate to be attending a live show last night here in Atlanta, Georgia...

How appropriate to be attending a live show last night here in Atlanta, Georgia... and to see the member of a band that of course was introduced to my ears by WNEW-FM the first time I heard them... From the Beginning, Tarkus or Lucky Man...
Greg Lake is here at the Variety Playhouse... a cozy venue like the Last Chance Saloon in Poguhkeepsie, New York... And also appropriate as a tribute to Pete and... Scotso... one of those things from England... ELP was... like King Crimson and Atomic Rooster and the first time I saw them play was at Fordham University in Da Bronx with time to have a White Castle with cheese around the corner on Fordham Road... and then watch Keith Emerson spin around in a contraption that would make you dizzy as he played.. at all places... Gaelic Park... a soccer field in Da Bronx !

The last few weeks have been full of sad music news...

The last few weeks have been full of sad music news... earlier today Pete Fornatele of WNEW-FM days in NYC passed away... a voice on the radio that I listened to every day along with Scotso, Roscoe, Jonathan and Allison... voices that were all so responsible for my own time in radio.... the top of the hill is here for many of us as the rest of us approach it... no time to waste...
God Bless you Pete Fornatele...

The test of an invention is the power ...

Polaroid co-founder Edwin Land said, "The test of an invention is the power of [the] inventor to push it through in the face of staunch - not opposition, but indifference - in society." Great ideas and inventions are often shunned or ignored before they are accepted. It makes sense then that inventors tend to be a hearty sort: they don't mind failure, they don't care what others think, and they're willing to work really damn hard.

Imagine.... it is 1967... some 45 years ago...
You pick up a 33 1/3 lp at the record store... not a 45 rpm record... a 12 inch record with lots of songs to listen to...
One in particular "Nights in White Satin" was longer than the abbreviated one played on the radio.. then "Tuesday Afternoon" and thus begins a trip through life "Days of Future Passed" sheer profundity...
As they celebrate 45 years of music the Moody Blues came through Atlanta last night... the Fabulous Fox theatre... a depression era rococo Moroccan splendid venue replete with false blue twilight sky overhead and twinkling stars... outdoors indoors... and a well done show of such memories from "Days of Passed Futures"...

A story that was perhaps overlooked this week by "Hunger Games" none the less... with an interest that would bring back childhood memories of "On the Beach", this story had a similar scenario as that with which Fred Astaire was at the wheel but not besides Willem Defoe... but rather it was Delancey Street in this one and that story required a trip to Australia for the end... to arrive...  again.

Ah... the love of a beagle...

Ah... the love of a beagle... forever at my side this weekend... fourth cup of coffee tastes as good as the first one... at 5:37am when the beagle noticed... something.... in the backyard and thought I would like to share that observation...
regardless of a sound sleep...

Vote much?

Here is a rather polite mathematical observation on the state of our nations debate... for those that you read who are in danger of losing a home in the “mortgage crisis”…

Why is it that when we buy a home appraised at fair market value for $336,000 and take a $150,000 mortgage, we own 55% of the home and the bank then owns 45%...

The economy and the market fails and falls and the home is then ...appraised at $226,000 and you now own 33% of the home and the bank now owns 67%... the loan to value does not adjust as your equity to value adjusts... upside?

Consequentially Americans need to refinance to lower their payments so they will not fall into foreclosure...

For the bank who has no risk in the fall of the economy has a preferred position now in your home and has profited on the fall of the economy and your home’s value as they now have a larger % of ownership...

Never mind that you got there because of the banks and their practices... never mind the government felt they were too big to fail and decided to give them money to protect their positions while you have gone unprotected and absorb the loss... pay the additional taxes to cover the investment to save the banks while they have profited from the transaction... both ways...

Such a preferred position... and time for a bonus... record profits... based on the demise of so many Americans...
or dare we say ... "American dream'...

Vote much?

A decision to do nothing is not the status quo…

A decision to do nothing is not the status quo… to do nothing is a conscious decision to do something that carries its own set of consequences...

Mediocrity is a life without oscillations…

Mediocrity is a life without oscillations… a sinusoidal wave meets the centerline to climb and fall… to know the low is to appreciate the high.. for those who have never known the low cannot truly understand the high… for a flat line perhaps safe...
would merely be mediocre…

Lost wheels...

The end of an era... or perhaps just another error...
Life like a well crafted "esse" has many twists and turns...
Those familiar roads can be navigated easily with anticipation of what the next bend will bring...
It's the road not travelled that brings the unexpected... with experience as your teacher and your guide... you navigate as best you can to safely get to your destination...
After 28 years the R100RS will leave my charge... it's clear that we do not own anything in this world... we are only allowed to be the best steward that we can while we are here...

if you can...

This book has been an important guide in my small collection for over 40 years... written by a favorite and albeit unknowingly... a mentor... radio raconteur... they are touching but brief short stories of occurrences in one’s life that hold much significance when approached and viewed separately, but somehow have a greater significance and impact on ones consciousness when viewed as a part of the whole...
Life is a long song... full of many changes... some that you make... others that are made for you without your consent or agreement... changes that you can agree with and yet others that you may try to resist.. but changes none the less... a road travelled or less travelled with only one destination in mind...
How you make it there may not be quite what it seems or perhaps not what you thought it would be, whether you may like it... or not...
But get there you will...
if you can...

Now that's something... have your car driven for you... who would you ask to stop at the convenience store to use the bathroom... Google would know how many times you stopped to use the lavatory and then your kidney incontinence would be co...mmon knowledge along with your driving habits, locations... along with your evenings permeated with virtual gaming... why not have a virtual job and forget the car... or just a virtual life... let someone else live it...
A novel idea.. why not just take a bus or the metro-north…. oh that would be highly schizophrenic now wouldn't it...

Mr Martin outlined how the agency suffered "5,408 computer security incidents" between 2010 and 2011.

He also noted that "between April 2009 and April 2011, Nasa reported the loss or theft of 48 Agency mobile computing devices".

In one incident an unencrypted notebook computer was lost containing details of the algorithms - the mathematical models - used to control the International Space Station.

What is the job of a thought leader?

Here is a thought provoking conversation...

What is the job of a thought leader? Gretzky is a retired Canadian hall-of-fame hockey player who once said, "A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be." Valuable advice but overused, here in SoCal, to the point that it has become code for "trifler."

Response
Actually rather than Wayne Gretzky in So Cal I would think that there are dozens of boxes of little Lego's. A thought leader would have been steeped in the instruction set to build a Millennium Falcon from the little bricks accurately following the supplied directions.

When the directions ended up in the trash and the little blocks were disassembled and placed in a plastic zip lock bag it would be interesting to see if the same Millennium Falcon could be construed from the same inventory of plastic blocks.

Better yet it would be far more interesting to see something materialize with far more significant value constructed from the same inventory of little plastic blocks. Indeed that it did not even vaguely resemble the Millennium Falcon, but would have required a new set of instructions for someone without a Lego mentality to appropriately duplicate the new significant innovation if it were relegated back to the zip lock bag.

Go where no one else will go..

Go where no one else will go.. take your innovation and lead... nothing will change without innovation, to be inside a box is to be warm and comfortable... boxes have four corners that will polarize your thinking.. boxes have quadrants that will not allow them to include an encompassing circle... innovate.... place the circle outside the box... from there your vision at any point on the curve will allow you to see every point inside the circle... including the area of importance that is not inclusive in the square...

Zen...

In ZAMM, Pirsig explores the meaning and concept of quality, a term he deems to be undefinable. Pirsig's thesis is that to truly experience quality one must both embrace and apply it as best fits the requirements of the situation. According... to Pirsig, such an approach would avoid a great deal of frustration and dissatisfaction common to modern life.

OM

1.The chanting of Om drives away all worldly thoughts and removes distraction and infuses new vigour in the body.
2.When you feel depressed, chant Om fifty times and you will be filled with new vigour and strength. The chanting of Om is a ...powerful tonic. When you chant Om, you feel you are the pure, all pervading light and consciousness.
3.Those who chant Om will have a powerful, sweet voice. Whenever you take a stroll, you can chant Om. You can also sing Om in a beautiful way. The rythmic pronunciation of Om makes the mind serene and pointed, and infuses the spiritual qualifications which ensure self-realization.
4.Those who do meditation of Om daily will get tremendous power. They will have lustre in their eyes and faces.

If we can't think for ourselves, if we're unwilling to question authority,

If we can't think for ourselves, if we're unwilling to question authority, then we're just putty in the hands of those in power. But if the citizens are educated and form their own opinions, then those in power work for us. In every country, we should be teaching our children the scientific method and the reasons for a Bill of Rights. With it comes a certain decency, humility and community spirit. In the demon-haunted world that we inhabit by virtue of being human, this may be all that stands between us and the enveloping darkness.

Midnight fridge

Awakened for a brief ride in the parallel universe, beagle says what'll you have... refridgerator door opens with a bright light shining... all the glossy, shiny packages, gleaming... choose one as they all smile... one sense teases with glee for there are many colorful and friendly choices...but then another sense sends a warning.... something is not quite right... there is a sneaking suspiscion ...that something... one of those shiny items has filled the fridge with an unmistakeable odor only masked by its glossy coat.. the truth be found only when you choose and when you reach for the wrong one.... or dig so deep as to uncover what is masked in the shiny exterior of that one false package... look closer before you leap... it may just soften the fall or provide flight...
